- banjo, harmony vocals
Everett "Buster" Sexton began playing guitar in 1964 when he was 14 years old, being influenced by his father and uncles who played on Friday and Saturday nights. Originally from Wytheville, Virginia, one of many hotbeds of bluegrass music in Southwest Virginia, he played folk, country, and rock until 1974, when he heard the classic album by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, "Will the Circle Be Unbroken". The drive of the banjo really amazed him, and shortly bought his first banjo. After a few unsuccessful attempts to teach himself, Buster met legendary banjo player Bill Emerson. He took lessons from Bill for over a year and developed his own style.
Buster has played with many great musicians over the years, including the Country Gentlemen (as a guest artist), the McPeak Brothers, Leon Morris and Associates, Chief Powhatan, Wayne Yates and Company, and eventually with his own group from the Shenandoah Valley, the East Coast Bluegrass Band, among many others. His major influences include Earl Scruggs (naturally), Bill Emerson, Ben Eldridge, Alan Munde, J.D. Crowe, Sammy Shelor, and Terry Baucom, among many other great banjo pickers.
Buster has recorded exstensively as a sideman and featured artist. His son, Chris, is a fine musician in his own right and is the fiddle player with the band, Nothin' Fancy. Currently employed by the Federal Government, Buster is looking forward to retirement in June 2010. He has been married to his lovely wife Helen, for over 26 years and lives in Stuart's Draft, Virginia.
